How Duplicate Letters Work in Word Guessing Games
Duplicate letters are one of the most common sources of confusion in word guessing games. A hidden word may contain the same letter more than once, while your guess might contain more copies than the answer does.
Understanding how feedback handles these situations can prevent incorrect assumptions.
Words Can Contain Repeated Letters
A five-letter answer is not required to contain five different letters. A word might contain:
- the same vowel twice
- a double consonant
- one letter appearing in two separated locations
That means discovering one correct instance of a letter does not automatically tell you how many times that letter appears.
Exact Matches Are Evaluated First
A fair word game should first identify letters that are already in the correct position. Those letters are matched before misplaced copies of the same letter are evaluated.
After exact matches are accounted for, the game determines how many unmatched copies of each letter remain in the hidden word.
Why This Matters
Imagine the answer contains one copy of a particular letter, but your guess contains that letter twice. If one copy is already correctly positioned, the second copy should not also be marked as present unless the answer actually contains another one.

Do Not Avoid Repeated Letters Entirely
Some players try never to use duplicate letters in guesses. That can be useful early when you are trying to test as many letters as possible. But later in the puzzle, avoiding duplicates can become a mistake. Once the evidence suggests a repeated letter, test it.
